Abstract

A work of fiction is not merely a sequence of events; it is a living world. Portraiture and landscape play an important role in bringing this world to life. In a literary work, a portrait is not simply a depiction of any individual; in literary criticism, it refers to a genre concerned with figures associated with literature, illuminating their biography, creative or scholarly-creative activity, position in society, spiritual character, inner world, and conduct. “In creating a portrait, the writer does not confine himself or herself to depicting such physical features as the face, eyes, eyebrows, lips, and nose, but also pays considerable attention to activities associated with the human psyche, including bodily movements, the manner of moving the hands and head, the tone and pace of speech, laughter, crying, and facial expressions accompanying these states.”¹
