Patient-Centered Communication as a Core Competency in Preparing FutureHealthcare Professionals

Abstract

Professional communication is a fundamental competency in contemporary healthcare. This paper examines patient-centered communication as the core element of preparing future healthcare professionals. Drawing on the original study, it synthesizes the theoretical foundations of competency-based education, patient-centered care, and communication training. The paper argues that communication competence should be embedded throughout medical education through simulation, reflective learning, standardized patient encounters, and authentic clinical practice. The discussion highlights the importance of empathy, ethical behaviour, emotional intelligence, and digital communication for improving diagnostic accuracy, patient trust, treatment adherence, and healthcare quality.
